Midtown is the youngest room in the Root of Happiness family, and it looks it. Spray-painted street art covers the walls, pink neon signs glow over the bar, and the whole space reads more gallery opening than tropical tiki bar. It's still unmistakably ours underneath, just with a Sacramento arts-district accent.
Reliable wifi and a genuinely comfortable place to sit have made this the daytime spot for Midtown's remote workers, freelancers, and anyone who wants their laptop hours to feel less like a coffee shop and less like a home office. Come afternoon it's quiet tables and long focus; the mood shifts entirely once evening hits.
Weekends bring live music, jazz on the regular and other acts in rotation, plus packaged snacks at the counter if you need something to go with your shell. Staff here get called out by name constantly in reviews, which tells you plenty about how the room actually runs.

Fresh frozen kava from Hawaii, Fiji, and our own American farms, poured daily alongside our traditional powdered house kavas. Noble root only, ground fresh and prepared by hand. Fresh is best, and here you can have it every day.

Ancient tonic herbs, iced pours, and botanical blends built for health conscious people who want somewhere to go that isn't a bar. Alcohol-free, made to order, and good enough that nobody at the table feels like they're settling.

Your First Visit
Start with one 12 oz High Tide shell of traditional fresh kava. It's the authentic preparation and the best way to understand what kava actually is. Give it 20 to 30 minutes before deciding on another.
If earthy and bitter isn't your thing, ask about our kava tonics and iced pours, like the Cloud Breaker with lemon honey concentrate. And if you'd rather skip kava entirely, we pour specialty espresso and a full botanical menu.
