A recent study published in the Journal of Food Science Technology (DOI: 10.1007/s13197-013-1047-2) co-authored by Wang and Bidderbender, explored the chemotype of kava beverages prepared using arguably the most desirable kava variety in the world, the famous Hawaiian Mahakea variety. Mahakea is highly desirable due to its potency and beautiful noble chemotype of either 426 or 462, it is considered by many to be the best variety of Kava available anywhere.
When the authors prepared a beverage from Mahkea roots acquired from Waimanalo Research Farm on Oahu, University of Hawaii, under laboratory settings, using 1:3 ratio of water to root in a blender, they found that the resulting beverage had a chemotype of 245. "...The chemotypes of the first three kavalactones in the Mahakea rhizomes beverages were 245." Thats right folks, when you prepare a kava beverage, the chemotype changes due to the varying degrees of solubility of the different lactones. Perhaps you don't really like a 426 chemotype, perhaps you like the 245 chemotype that it turns into after you prepare a beverage from it!

We've seen many bottled Kava beverages over the years that have come and gone (failed) for one reason or another. Some have tasted horrible, some have lacked potency, some have had shelf stability problems, and still others have had a nasty combination of these shortcomings. Kava is a complicated plant to put into a bottle as there are many problems that can go wrong due to kava's unique makeup. This explains why in the past 3,000 years of kava usage, there have been very few products to have actually made it to market and even fewer that have stayed there for any length of time.

There are so many different "ginsengs" out there that it can be rather confusing to the consumer as to which one will fit their needs. The marketplace is full of products labeled as 'Asian Ginseng' , 'Korean Ginseng', 'American Ginseng', 'Siberian Ginseng', 'White Ginseng', 'Red Ginseng' among others. Whats the difference between all of these you might ask? Lets delve into the topic in today's blog post.
Ginseng Defined
Asian Ginseng or Panax Ginseng refers to Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer. It is True ginseng. The active constituents for which ginseng is renowned are called ginsenosides and are unique to members of the Panax genus. Panax ginseng comes in two forms, white and red. The difference being that white ginseng is the fresh root that comes out of the ground and dried, versus red ginseng that has been steam treated before drying. The steam process changes the chemical profile of the white ginseng and makes it more stimulating and warming. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, White ginseng is considered cooling and balancing, while red ginseng is considered warming and stimulating.
Other "Ginsengs" such as Siberian ginseng (Eulethero) or "Indian Ginseng" (Ashwghanda) play off from Ginsengs 5,000 year old name for having similar qualities, but at the end of the day they are not true ginsengs. The FDA has even made companies stop calling their products "Ginseng" if they are not true Panax Genus Ginsengs.
The Numbers
White Korean Ginseng contains 36 Saponins.
Red Koren Ginseng contains 3 Saponins.
White Chinese Ginseng contains 14 Saponins.
American Ginseng contains 13 Saponins.
So we can see that simply by steaming white ginseng into red, it converts 36 Saponins down into 3. Hence, red ginseng is much more stimulating due to the lack of balance that it has compared to the 36 saponins in its white, raw state.

Ginseng is the common name of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer, a valuable Traditional Chinese medicinal herb. Ginseng is considered a supreme tonic herb in traditional Chinese medicine, one of the oldest and most comprehensive medicine systems in the world. The genus name ‘Panax’ is derived from the Greek word ‘Pan; meaning all or every and ‘Axos’, meaning “cure”. Thus “Panax” translates to cure-all. The term ‘ginseng’ is a combination of Chinese pin names ‘ren’ which has over the years been transposed into ‘gin’, meaning “man” and ‘seng’ which translates to “essence”. Thus, “Ginseng” literally translates to, “the essence of man” and it is thought to symbolize man’s essence- Body, mind, and spirit. The name Panax Ginseng translates to, “Cure all for man’s body, mind, and spirit.” It is thus referred to as the King of Herbs due to its ability to enhance vitality, and assist the body’s ability to adapt to various stressors such as strenuous work and age related nagging ailments. It can help with waning energy and focus, to fortifying the body’s defenses. Overall, it is difficult to find any one other herb that has as many positive effects on the body than Ginseng.
For this reason, we have sought out the very best ginseng available, paying particular attention to the growing, harvesting, processing, extraction, and concentration processes. Using ancient growing and processing techniques combined with 21st century advances in biotechnology, we’ve arrived at a ginseng product unlike any other on the market. It is important to understand that Ginseng is a sensitive “live” natural food that is loaded with biologically active constituents. Great care must go into both acquiring good starting material and preserving these constituents throughout the processing and extraction.
First, we utilize only Korean Panax Ginseng, the king of ginsengs, of 4-6 year maturity levels. Ginseng does not develop the full range of beneficial constituents, called ginsenosides, until a minimum of 4 years. Typically, younger roots are used in inferior products such as gas station vials of ginseng or poorly made energy drinks that are overly stimulating, warming, and jagged. To preserve all of the vitamins and minerals and of course, ginsenosides, our process uses whole roots and rootlets, and a no heat steaming method to process the fresh white ginseng into Red Panax. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the steaming process, all ginseng is white ginseng when it comes out of the ground until it is processed with steam to turn it into red ginseng through the oxidative process. Think of how an apple turns reddish or brown when it oxidizes in the open air. Many companies use a quick, high heat process that produces an unbalanced ginseng extract that is nearly devoid of important vitamins and minerals and other constituents which help to balance and support the action of ginsenosides in the body. One such constituent, a mineral known as Germanium, is considered by many researchers and medical professionals to be the world’s most effective natural blood cleanser. It is found in high amounts in our extract and nearly absent in commercially available ginseng products.

Introducing our Premium Samoan Kava
This material comes from our newly acquired private farm in Western Samoa that has been growing kava for generations. Some of the plants on the farm are well over 20 years old and test with a beautiful NOBLE NOBLE NOBLE chemotype of 436! It doesn't get more noble than that folks. We only get 50kg of this material per month so that we can sustainably grow this material for generations to come. For every plant that we harvest, we plant 20 more in the ground!
Processing is just as important to kava quality and safety as the growing and harvesting conditions. It is for this reason that we have built our own processing facility to properly wash, dry, and process our roots immediately following their harvest. Since its our farm and our facility, we do things our way. This kava is what you call "White Flesh" Kava. It has had the outer skin meticulously removed for two reasons: 1. You are not consuming any dirt particles that were left over from cleaning, and 2. It is nearly totally devoid of the bitter, peppery components that are present in the outer skin. The end result is a POTENT kava that is smooth and palatable to drink.
